This week's haul:
- 2 heads of lettuce
- 1 pound bunch of kale or collard greens
- 1/2 pound of mixed greens: mesclun, baby kale, mustard
- 1 quart of strawberries
S took the train from work and met me at my office, and we drove to Land's Sake. When we pulled up to the Prius-filled parking lot, I wasn't sure what to expect. There were some people milling around, but it wasn't clear if they were employees or fellow shareholders.
We found our way into a sort of pavillion. A chalkboard proclaimed the week's share: 2 heads of lettuce, a quart of strawberries, a bunch of either collard greens or kale, and half a pound of your choice of mesclun, baby kale, or mustard greens. A few other shareholders were picking their stuff up at the same time, and no employees were evident. The kale bin was already empty, so evidently others had come before us.
The strawberries were pick-your-own, so we took pint boxes and wandered out into the fields. After some minor difficulty, we found the rows of strawberry plants and set to work. Many of the strawberries were still green or not fully ripe, but we were still able to fill our boxes pretty quickly. The berries looked really good, and I had trouble not gorging myself directly from the plants.
So far we've just used the lettuce on sandwiches and eaten the strawberries, but everything's been really good.
